Confused Seasons

I think someone forgot to CC old man Winter when we switched over to Spring. Spring tried to hold the snow off for as long as possible with steady rain, but sometime last night Spring relented and Winter took over.

AIG - "I quit"

Anyone remotely following the unfolding AIG bonus payment scandal should definitely read this article. It's a great reminder that there are people and faces behind all the corporations. Are we almost always too quick to judge? It is with deep regret that I submit my notice of resignation from A.I.G. Financial Products. I hope you take the time to read this entire letter. Before describing the details of my decision, I want to offer some context:...

A Piper Plea

A friend of mine emailed me the following post by John Piper. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it. Do you agree with Piper's take on Bible Study? Are you currently reading books or taking a class on or about the Bible? Would you recommend it? Can you think of Scriptures that would contextually support or detract from what Piper's saying here?A Plea for Heart Devotions and Head Study

(Author: John Piper)
This is a plea that all of you would build into your lives both personal devotions and purposeful study of God's word.

Both:Daily prayerful meditation seeking personal application of God's word to your own heart and life.
And:Regular study in a class or with a book where the (living or dead) teacher has seen more than you have and can give you insight in 30 minutes that might otherwise take you ten years to see.
The reason I plead for both is that without a book or a class about what some part of the Bible means and a teacher who is ahead of you, your devotions will probably flatten out at a low level of insight.
Year after year you will go over the same biblical ground and find it as perplexing as before. There will be little advance in understanding. This will tend to take the heart out of devotional reading, because the lack of growth cannot sustain the joy.
Seek out preaching, books, and classes which take you further in grasping what various books and texts in the Bible mean.

P.E.

If anyone knows how to find the amount of Capacitive Reactance power, in kVAR, that must be added to a system with varying loads and power factors so that the overall system power factor is .98 lagging, then could you please come and tutor me for my P.E. exam coming up on April 24th?

*sigh* I am so going to fail this thing.

The fact that my boss had to take it three times before he passed makes me feel a little better. :-)

Preconceived Notions

We approach Scripture with minds already formed by the mass of accepted opinions and viewpoints with which we have come into contact, in both the Church and the world.…It is easy to be unaware that it has happened; it is hard even to begin to realize how profoundly tradition in this sense has moulded us. –J.I. *sigh*

I was very thankful for my wife's good attitude this morning. Especially considering that I woke her up to tell her I was going to be running the wet/dry vac in our basement.

Yep, that's right. Our basement had water in it...again. (full disclosure: the picture on the left is not a photo of the actual event.)

Thankfully it wasn't near as bad as last time. Our floor drains were doing their job, and our sump pump was doing it's job. The problem this time was that the floor isn't sloped toward the floor drains very well, so when our septic tank refused to take any more water and overflowed into our house, it just pooled on the floor. I'm pretty sure most of the water on our floor came from my shower this morning. At least, I'm hoping most of it came from there rather than leaking up through the floor. It's hard to tell where water came from once it's all spread out.

So Heidi's going to keep an eye on it today, and hopefully the worst of it's over. In the meantime, we can't let any water go down the drain.

But I'm thankful my wife kept a good perspective through it all. I'm so blessed to have her as a helper.

"Change Blindness"

In visual perception, change blindness is the phenomenon that occurs when a person viewing a visual scene apparently fails to detect large changes in the scene. For change blindness to occur, the change in the scene typically has to coincide with some visual disruption such as a saccade (eye movement) or a brief obscuration of the observed scene or image. When looking at still images, a viewer can experience change blindness if part of the image changes.

There's a great example of this on youtube, but they had disabled the embedded video option, so click here to check it out.

The study of how the brain actually works has always amazed me. Out of all God's creation, that's probably the most astounding to me.
