Tickled

Why Can't a Person Tickle Himself?
From ScientificAmerican.com

Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, a research fellow at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London, explains.

The answer lies at the back of the brain in an area called the cerebellum, which is involved in monitoring movements. Our studies at University College London have shown that the cerebellum can predict sensations when your own movement causes them but not when someone else does. When you try to tickle yourself, the cerebellum predicts the sensation and this prediction is used to cancel the response of other brain areas to the tickle.

Two brain regions are involved in processing how tickling feels. The somatosensory cortex processes touch and the anterior cingulate cortex processes pleasant information. We found that both these regions are less active during self-tickling than they are during tickling performed by someone else, which helps to explains why it doesn't feel tickly and pleasant when you tickle yourself. Further studies using robots showed that the presence of a small delay between your own movement and the resulting tickle can make the sensation feel tickly. Indeed, the longer the delay, the more tickly it feels. So it might be possible to tickle yourself, if you are willing to invest in a couple of robots!

Learning & Growing

Can you remember the last time that life taught you a lesson?

Was it a gentle lesson or a hard lesson?

Sometimes we get taught through positive reinforcement. We'll do something or take some action and get a really positive response which makes us want to do it again.

Sometimes we learn through negative reinforcement. We'll do something or take some action and get a really tough result which helps us remember to not do it again.

Another way we sometimes learn a lesson is when someone else does something and we suffer for it. It can make us realize the danger in what they did and help us to remember not to do it ourselves.

This last way of learning is often the most difficult. We struggle with it "not being fair". After all...why should we suffer for someone else's mistake? However, this way of learning is often the most effective. The circumstances surrounding this method often stick with us for a long time. Pain, wether emotional or physical, has a way of driving home a point. So the next time you're suffering because of someone else's mistake, don't let Satan make you bitter. Instead, look for what you can learn from the situation so that you don't inadvertantly hurt others the same way.

Remember, God has reasons, and He is sovereign. Romans 8:28-29 tells us that everything in the life of a Christian happens in order to grow them into a greater likeness of Christ.

It's important to remember that through it all, we shouldn't base our future actions and decisions based strictly on experience. We should base them first and foremost on the principles in God's Word, regardless of the outcome. This isn't our natural inclination. We want to do the thing that we think gives us the best chance for the outcome we want, but that's not what the Word calls us to.

Be true to the Word, and then let the outcome rest in God's Sovereignty.

Sometimes I think we just don't get it...

Jesus Christ, I think upon Your sacrifice
You became nothing, poured out to death
Many times I've wondered at Your gift of life
And I'm in that place once again
I'm in that place once again

And once again I look upon the cross where You died
I'm humbled by Your mercy and I'm broken inside
Once again I thank You
Once again I pour out my life

Now You are exalted to the highest place
King of the heavens, where one day I'll bow
But for now I marvel at Your saving grace
And I'm full of praise once again
I'm full of praise once again

Thank You for the cross
Thank You for the cross
Thank You for the cross, my friend

The Father's Heart

Here's another message from Bill Bright.

All glory to God, who is able to keep you from stumbling (Jude 24, NLT).

Dear friends:

Our two sons, Zac and Brad, are both grown now and both are serving the Lord in full-time ministry. Experiences with them as children taught us many things about how our heavenly Father views us.

Many years ago, my wife Vonette and I were walking down a shallow stream in Yosemite National Park with our sons, who were very small at the time. Because the rocks were slippery, I was holding our five-year-old son, Brad, by the hand. Suddenly Brad slipped, and his feet went out from under him. I held him firmly until he regained his balance. As we continued on our walk, Brad looked up at me and said, "Daddy, I'm sure glad you saved me from falling."

At that moment I was reminded how my heavenly Father has kept me from falling on many occasions. We walked in silence for a few minutes. Then Brad gazed up into my face again and said, "Daddy, I'm glad you're holding my hand." This time tears came to my eyes as I said to my Father in Heaven, "I'm so glad you hold me by the hand; I'm so prone to fall." I am reminded of the words from Jude 24, above.

My two sons mean more to me than I could ever begin to put into words. On another day when they were small, as I was preparing a message, Zac suddenly appeared with a stack of books and sat down across the table from me. I sensed the warmth of his love, even though he didn't want to interrupt my study. My heart melted, and I broke the silence: "Zac," I said, "I want you to know how much it means to me that you have come to sit with me."

He replied, "Daddy, that's the reason I've come -- I just want to be with you."

Suddenly, for the first time in my life, I really understood how the great heart of our loving Father longs for fellowship with man. If I delight in my sons and long to be with them and tell them that I love them and care for them, surely God's delight in us is infinitely greater because His capacity for love is so much greater.

Let us return His love, with all our hearts, souls, minds and strength.

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,

Bill Bright

Sufficient

Sufficient: Being as much as is needed

I'm thankful for the sufficiency of Christ. He will supply as much as is needed in my life, and in His sovereignty He supplies exactly that.

I may reflect on my spiritual life and think, "Why doesn't God give me more patience?"

I may reflect on my physical circumstances and think, "Why has God given me so much?"

I may reflect on my emotional state and think, "Why am I so insecure?"

Then Christ calls out to me from the cross and says, "Why are you looking at other things? Focus your eyes on Me. I am sufficient."

God is working a perfect work in His children. Submit to that work. Everything has a purpose, and God is in control.

Next time you get frustrated, angry, confused, depressed, etc... remember to focus on Jesus and keep the main thing the main thing.

*yawn*

Today is one of those days where, when I blink, it takes effort to re-open my eyes.

Yeah...definitely didn't get enough sleep this weekend.

Getting a good nights rest seems to go hand in hand with my spiritual alertness. Being tired seems to make it more difficult to let the joy of Jesus shine through - especially through my countenance.

I need to sleep more.

What a Gift!

This guy has crazy skills. I can't imagine how long it would take to learn this stuff.

It's a virtue

Ec 7:8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

Patient:enduring trying circumstances with even temper

bearing provocation, annoyance, misfortune, delay, hardship, pain, etc., with fortitude and calm and without complaint, anger, or the like.

Hold on!

Wow...life can get crazy sometimes. One second you think you've got things pretty much figured out...you've got a plan...it all makes sense...

And then...BLAM!

Two seconds later you're in a completely different spot than you ever thought you'd be...

And all you have left is to cling to Jesus...

But then again, isn't that what it's all about?...clinging to Jesus?

What a great God we serve! I'm praising Him for all that He is!

Wow...

I passed 150,000 hits today. It's a little surreal. God is good.

Some give all...

It's long, but helps keep things in perspective."Grenade!"

Manning a .50-caliber machine gun in the turret of a Humvee, Pfc. Ross McGinnis could see the insurgent on a rooftop fling a hand grenade at his vehicle. He shouted and tried to deflect it, but it fell inside. Four of his buddies were down there.

What followed was a stunning act of self-sacrifice. McGinnis, a 19-year-old from rural Pennsylvania and the youngest soldier in his unit, threw himself backward onto the grenade, absorbing the blast with his body. He was killed instantly. The others escaped serious injury.
