Dear God:
Our Christian life should not be a life of apathy or lethargy. Paul, in numerous passages, encourages us with all kinds of action words like press, gird up, run, strive, come out, pray, study, rejoice, weep, love, preach, teach, encourage, admonish, exhort, stand(yes, that's an action too), forgive, put on, etc...
I'm sure everyone could add something to this list. When you read through it did you find yourself thinking of scripture that used those words? That's what it means to "hide the Word in your heart". Hey, "Hide" is another one!
Let's look for action words in the Scriptures and then actively seek to apply them to our lives!

i really enjoyed this post luke. full of good reminders for all of us. one thing that did come to mind though while you were talking of hiding God's word in our hearts. we need to hide it there yes, but we need to also make sure we don't "hide" it so well that even WE can't find it. we need to make sure that we hide it so others (namely satan) can't take it away from us. but we also need to have that word ready @ a moments notice to bring it out and show the world! just a thought.

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
If we hide it so well that we can't find it, then we're not getting the principle behind the verse. The whole reason that we would hide the word in our hearts is so "we might not sin" against God.
We also need to reconcile that hiding it with 1Pe 3:15
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

Luke. You're awesome. You're such an encouragement in my daily walk with God (even though we've been aquainted only briefly), and God's light definitly shines through your thoughts.
Thank you for being sensitive to God's word, and sharing that word with us.
Good job at dissecting the Philippians verse! What a good reminder to be active for Christ. James 1:22-But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
Meg, I used to think, "Yeah, why would anyone want to HIDE the Word?" Now, when I think of "hiding" the Word in my heart, I moreso think of studying it and memorizing it so that it's IN there to share! If we don't hide it in our heart, we can't share it on the go.
Yet... there is something so special about having those precious words deep down inside of us to dwell upon... another use of hiding it in our heart.

I have to admit, I am impressed with the amount of wisdom on display here. Not to puff you guys up, but those are excellent thoughts.
Now, I admit that the concept of hiding the word in my heart has often bothered me, primarily since we are supposed to be a shining example for those around us. If we hide the word (In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God - John 1:1) aren't we also kind of hiding God? Either there is a conotation of hide that I don't understand or I am misunderstanding something along the way here. Thoughts?
And yes I know my spelling is less then the best.

Your right you should be lathargic. Rationlizing away logic is bad too.
I think everyone around here should realize what it means to "quarantine" a city or region. And, they should also understand what the media has not: there are very good reasons why the Gov of Louisiana refused to cede control to Bush.
First, quarantine takes place under martial law. Martial law means curfews. It means military checkpoints. It means surrendering papers.
It means all Constitutional protections for American citizens are suspended.
Further, in June 2002, Congress passed a law that allows Bush to declare martial law in the event of a suspected epidemic and quarantine anyone in a state of "pre-communicability."
"Pre-communicability" is not a medical term. It has no know medical meaning.
With the right judge, anyone could be found to be in a state of pre-communicability.
I think it's pretty clear that Bush wanted to use Katrina both as precedent to overturn any institutional resistance to Posse Comitatus, and also as practice for the troops here in the United States.
Remember that the troops have been training in urban and suburban situation in Iraq, using checkpoints and conducting house-to-house searches in Iraq.
It is also clear that LoBianco understood this. Even with her refusal to allow it, however, we still heard nonsensical reports that there was a high-level biological threat, and people would get sick if they stayed in their homes. No such illnesses materialized. And, although the Feds and Blackwater threatened to remove people from their homes, they did not proceed with forced removals. We know, however, that they were patrolling the streets and conducting training exercises, post-Katrina, INSTEAD OF HELPING PEOPLE WHO NEEDED HELP.
This is scary stuff. It is made scarier by the assertions of several commentators that what Bush is most interested in from a Supreme Court nominee is an expansive view of Presidential power. The consistent theme behind Roberts and Miers is loyalty and further, an allegiance to expanding Bush's power.
We are living in interesting times.

Thy word have I "treasured and stored up" in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Heather: Great thought! It's so easy to grant lip service, especially for those of us who grew up around church. Let us always remember that Christ wants our hearts to influence our actions. He's not impressed by empty words. That's very evident in how he dealt with the pharisee's.
